Summary

This grant opportunity provides funding to support community‑driven projects across a defined service region, with a broad set of eligible focus areas including arts and cultural activities, education, environmental protection, historic preservation, public health, public safety, and natural‑resource or habitat restoration. Grants are available to eligible nonprofit organizations, tribal governments or agencies, and other community‑serving entities — not to private individuals or for‑profit businesses.

Each quarter, the foundation accepts applications from organizations operating within specific counties or tribal territories in its service area. Grants are awarded through a competitive process, with a maximum award of up to $30,000 per organization per year. In addition, a separate “Rapid Response” grant stream provides smaller awards (up to $1,500) for urgent or immediate community needs, allowing flexibility for smaller‑scale or time‑sensitive projects.

Funds may be used for a wide variety of purposes depending on community priorities and project proposals. Permitted uses include cultural and arts programming, community education initiatives, environmental and habitat restoration projects (such as watershed, river, or salmon‑restoration efforts), public‑health or social‑service programs, enhancement or preservation of historic buildings or community landmarks, and initiatives that improve public safety or strengthen civic infrastructure. The funding can also support youth programs, social‑service outreach, and efforts to address addiction or other public‑health challenges, when such needs are identified.

Eligible applicants must submit a complete application during one of the quarterly deadlines, and if awarded, commit to carrying out the proposed work within an agreed period (typically one year). Recipients are accountable for delivering on their proposed plan and submitting a final report upon project completion.

This grant opportunity aims to empower community‑based organizations across rural and tribal regions to build stronger, healthier, more vibrant communities. By investing in cultural, educational, environmental, social, and safety‑related projects, the program supports long‑term community resilience, improved quality of life, and sustainable development — especially in underserved or historically underfunded areas.

Organizations and individuals based in Washington who are engaged in Environment may be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity. To discover more grants that align with your mission and objectives, visit The Grant Portal and explore listings using the Search Grant tool.
