Summary

This award is designed to help early-career researchers—or those returning to their research careers after a break—launch a meaningful independent project in vision science. Two separate awards are granted each year: one for a researcher in the U.S., and one for an investigator based outside the U.S.

Each award provides $30,000 to support the proposed research effort, with the expectation that the work be completed within a two-year timeframe. Recipients are invited to attend related professional gatherings, receive a commemorative token of recognition, and may have opportunities to connect with peers and mentors in their field.

To be eligible, applicants should be within their first three years of their primary academic appointment or re-entering active research after at least a year away. A mentor or senior colleague must be involved in the project to support its success. Additionally, applicants must not currently hold a major research grant equivalent to an NIH R-series award. If an application is not selected, a new one may be submitted in the following cycle. Awardees must wait three years before reapplying.

The application window typically opens in early August and closes on October 1 each year, with announcements following by late fall or early winter.
